What I Wish I Knew Before Getting Botox or Jeuveau

As a nurse practitioner and injector at The Skin Clinic Aesthetics + Wellness in North Mankato, I hear the same worries from people considering their first tox treatment: Will I look frozen? Will people be able to tell? What if I hate it?

So here's what I'd tell you if we were sitting down together before your first appointment. These are the things I wish every client knew before getting Botox or Jeuveau.

1. Botox and Jeuveau are close cousins, not the same product

Botox and Jeuveau are both prescription wrinkle relaxers made from botulinum toxin type A. Both work the same basic way: they temporarily reduce the movement of a targeted muscle so the line that muscle creates can soften.

There are real differences, though, and the biggest one is FDA approval. Botox Cosmetic is approved for moderate to severe forehead lines, frown lines, crow's feet and certain neck bands in adults. Jeuveau is approved for frown lines between the eyebrows, often called the "11s." Injectors may use either product in other areas, but those uses can be off-label, and you deserve to know that before treatment.

One product isn't automatically better for everyone. Your injector looks at your anatomy, your treatment history and what you want to change, then explains which option makes sense for you.

2. You're paying for judgment, not just units

It's tempting to shop by price per unit, but units can't be directly compared between products, and the number on a menu doesn't tell you much about the result you'll get. What matters is the right dose in the right spot for your face.

Before anyone picks up a syringe, you should have a conversation about how your face moves, where your brows sit, how strong your muscles are and how any previous treatment went. At The Skin Clinic, that assessment comes first. You'll be treated by a licensed injector on our team: me, Heidi Hermel, CNP; Rachel Harding, RN, BAN; or Lori Hogue, RN, BSN. Ask who's treating you and what their training is. A good injector will be happy to answer.

3. You don't have to look frozen

The "frozen" look usually comes from a plan that doesn't match the person, not from the product itself. You choose how much movement you want to keep. Some clients want the lines between their brows gone. Others just want to look a little less tired on a Zoom call.

If you're nervous, say so. Tell your injector exactly what you're worried about, and bring a photo of yourself from a few years ago if it helps. A conservative first treatment is a perfectly reasonable place to start, because we can learn how your face responds and adjust at your follow-up.

4. Results take time, so don't panic on day three

Wrinkle relaxers don't work the moment you leave the office. You may notice early changes within a few days, but results keep developing, and it takes about 2 weeks to see your full result. Early timing can vary by product, treatment area and your own response.

Your injector will tell you when to check in. If something looks uneven once your results have settled, call us. That's what follow-up is for.

My tip: If you have a wedding, reunion or big photo day coming up, plan your treatment several weeks ahead. Don't make the week before your event your first appointment.

5. It's temporary, and that's a good thing

Most clients see results last about 3 to 4 months, though it depends on the product, dose, treatment area and how your body responds. Muscle movement returns gradually. You won't wake up one morning with your lines suddenly back, and your face doesn't "fall" when it wears off.

Temporary also means you stay in control. If you don't love something, it doesn't last forever. Maintenance is your choice, and we'll plan the timing around your goals.

6. It only treats certain kinds of lines

This one surprises people more than anything else. Botox and Jeuveau treat lines caused by muscle movement. They don't add volume, and they won't fix sun damage, redness, crepey texture or lost collagen.

I tell clients to think of it like taking care of their teeth. Big treatments are the braces. Botox and filler are the cleanings that maintain your results. Skin care is your daily brushing and flossing. You wouldn't skip the brushing just because you get your teeth cleaned, and the same goes for your skin.

That's why we're a skin-first practice. Medical-grade skin care protects your investment, and if volume or texture is part of your concern, we'll tell you honestly what will help. You can compare Botox, fillers and skin resurfacing here, or read more about why Botox is only one piece of the puzzle.

7. Your health history really matters

These are prescription medications, so please be open with us. Before treatment, tell your injector about:

  • Any medications and supplements you take, including blood thinners

  • Allergies, and any past reaction to a botulinum toxin product

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

  • Muscle or nerve conditions

  • Trouble swallowing or breathing

  • Previous injections, including the date and product, and any other recent procedures

Please don't stop a prescribed medication on your own to get ready for an appointment. Talk with your prescribing clinician first.

8. Know what's normal and what isn't

Most people return to routine activities soon after treatment. Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising or a headache can happen, and they're worth planning around if you have an important event. Less commonly, an eyelid or brow can droop for a while.

Get urgent medical help right away if you have trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing after treatment. Also contact your injector if you notice muscle weakness, vision changes or anything that worries you. Go over the risks for your specific product during your consultation, and follow your injector's aftercare instructions. Here's more on Botox aftercare.

9. Tox can do more than smooth wrinkles

My favorite things to treat are a gummy smile and the masseter.

A gummy smile happens when the upper lip lifts high enough to show more of the gums than you'd like. A small, precise treatment can relax the muscles that lift the lip, so your smile shows less gum and still looks like yours.

Masseter tox treats the large chewing muscle at the back of the jaw. It can help if you clench, and it can soften a jawline that looks wide or square from an overworked muscle. Here's more on masseter tox for TMJ and jaw clenching.

Both are off-label uses, so we'll talk through whether they're right for you, what to expect and the risks. If jaw pain or clenching is part of the picture, you may also need a dental or medical evaluation.

Thinking about your first treatment?

The best first step is a conversation, with no pressure to decide on the spot. We'll look at how your face moves, listen to what bothers you and what doesn't, and walk you through your options and pricing before anything happens.
